New treasurer and membership renewal
ITI Cymru Wales announces its new treasurer, Lloyd Bingham MITI. Lloyd has now sent out membership renewal notices. If you have not received one and would like to renew/join, please contact us.
There are two fundamental changes to membership organisation. Firstly, the membership year will now run from January until December, at no extra cost if you have renewed since June. Secondly, to decrease the administrative burden, members will now be asked to renew in two-year cycles. However, the annual cost has not changed and remains excellent value at £24 for two years.
If you are a professional translator/interpreter, a student of the profession or anyone with an interest in the profession, whether you live in Wales or not, why not join us?

ITI Cymru Wales talks to translation students at Cardiff University
ITI Cymru Wales joint coordinator Elvana Moore and committee member Lloyd Bingham both spoke to students of the 'Translation as a Profession' module at Cardiff University, taught by fellow coordinator Trinidad Clares, on Friday 1 May.
Kelly Evans of Cardiff-based Business Language Services opened the event, talking about how translators new to the market can attract agency clients by optimising their applications. Lloyd then presented on 'Getting into Translation', speaking on hot topics such as acquiring pro bono experience, setting rates and specialising. Elvana rounded off the day with her experience of working as a translator and interpreter simultaneously.
The students had plenty of questions for the three speakers, including an especially interesting one on why translators should work together with their competitors. Lloyd responded that professional freelance translators see other such translators as colleagues, rather than competitors, as even a colleague with the same language pair will have different specialisms, a different skill-set and different experience. He was also keen to point out the well-established community of freelance translators in Cardiff, who meet socially at least once a month and organise co-working sessions every fortnight.
ITI Cymru Wales is proud to have established a close relationship with Cardiff University in order to help train future generations of translation and interpreting professionals and prepare them for the industry.
